The Alliance Française was created in 1883 in Paris to encourage the propagation of the French language & culture, and to foster friendly relations between France and the rest of the world. It is a non-governmental, non-profit organization with the largest network of French language and cultural centers in the world. There are 1,200 Alliances chapters in 112 countries, including 140 chapters in the United United States, serving over 400,000 students. The French language is spoken on five continents and by more than 180 million people.

In 2005, with the support of the University of Florida, the Alliance Française de Gainesville was officially recognized by l'Alliance Française de Paris and la Délégation Générale de l'Alliance Française USA in Washington DC and became the newest chapter in Florida. Our chapter welcomes members and offers a variety of cultural and social events. We are proud to announce the debut of our French Language Institute in 2014. As early as February we will begin offering language classes for members of all ages including children. Besides the language instruction, we will continue to offer our cultural and social activities. Many of our members share their passions for French cuisine, travel, art and music. We cordially invite anyone with an interest in French language or culture to join us for a class or an event and we look forward to meeting you here at the Alliance Française de Gainesville!
